All eyes will be on the 400m world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk, on Tuesday evening when he takes to the track in the final at the IAAF World Championships in London.

Van Niekerk will be targeting his second gold at the World Championships to add to his Olympic gold he won nearly a year ago in Rio de Janeiro.

On Monday night Van Niekerk ran his 200m heat in 20.16 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals.

On Tuesday evening the Bloemfontein sprinter will be running in lane six, alongside the Potchefstroom-based Botswanan, Isaac Makwala, who is also considered to be his biggest threat.

Makwala was last withdrawal from the 200m heats.

Following his 400m semi-final, Van Niekerk, said he was grateful the line-up was changed at the last moment.

“It seems like every time we hit the track, someone breaks 44 seconds, but it’s good competition and I always have to be on my A-game.

“Whoever change it, I thank you so much. I wasn’t ready for a 43.80 in the heats and it was a surprise to me as well.”

Tuesday evening’s 400m final in London takes place at 22:50.
