The new minister of Sport and Recreation, Thulas Nxesi, has lifted the ban on rugby, cricket and netball to bid to host major sporting events in South Africa.

More than a year ago the former minister of sport, Fikile Mbalula, banned the governing bodies of the aforementioned sporting codes from bidding to host events due to the lack of transformation.

This ban could have had a major impact, in particular seeing that the South African Rugby Union were in the process of bidding for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Government officials and representatives of the governing bodies met to review the 2015/16 Eminent Persons Group report on transformation.

Shortly after the meeting, the department announced that the ban on bidding had been lifted with immediate effect.

The lifting of the ban means that the government can now official back the Rugby World Cup bid and sign the necessary documentation before the 1 June deadline.
