The South African 4 x 100m relay team of Henrico Bruintjies, Gift Leotlela, Clarence Munyai and Akani Simbine came agonisingly close to breaking the national record during the fourth and final leg of the ASA Speed Series.

The team clocked a blistering time of 38.47 seconds for the second fastest time ever in South Africa, just 0.12 seconds outside the national record.

The South African 200m record holder Anaso Jobodwana won the men’s 100m sprint comfortably in 10.36 seconds to beat Le Roux van Tonder.

Following his win, Jobodwana said that there is still quite a bit of fine tuning before the nationals next month.

“My intensity and my rhythm is the big thing," Jobodwana said.

“When I get up into my running it feels so smooth, but I need that acceleration.

“I've been getting it right at training but when I get to a race it's still not clicking, so I have to go back and fix it.”

In the woman’s 100m Tamzin Thomas carried on with her good form this season to beat Alyssa Conley in 11.50 seconds.

Anton Alkana won the men’s’ 110m hurdles in 13.52 seconds while Claudia Heunis claimed the woman’s 100m hurdles in 13.56 seconds.

The next major athletics meet in South Africa will be the senior national championships in Potchefstroom from 20 to 22 April.
