Agri News Podcast: Possible Winburg farm attack thwarted | News Article

Swift reaction by police in Winburg in the Free State has led to the prevention of a possible farm attack after two suspicious vehicles with eight occupants turned up on the Witval farm in the district.

Police spokesperson, Malebo Khosana, tells OFM News on Tuesday the suspects wanted to buy sheep. The farm owner was not on the farm at the time, but a farm worker, suspecting foul play, alerted his employer who immediately contacted the local police station. Khosana says the vehicles and passengers were searched and an unlicensed fire arm was found hidden inside one of the vehicles. In the other vehicle, a glove, balaclava and a man-made sharp object were found. The eight were arrested and detained for the possession of unlicensed firearm and conspiracy to commit an unknown crime. According to Khosana, four of the suspects are illegal immigrants. They are expected to appear in the Winburg Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is expected to visit the Vaal River System rehabilitation project this week. The project, which is currently underway, involves technical teams from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to restore infrastructure at the polluted Vaal River system. The project comes after Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, announced during his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in October that the defence force had been called on to assist in efforts to urgently rehabilitate the Vaal River system.  Communities and irrigation farmers are affected by the water pollution, caused by raw sewage flowing into the river from pump stations in the Emfuleni Municipality. This includes Vereeniging, Sebokeng, Boipatong and Sharpeville. Despite limited resources and capabilities, members of the SANDF have been hard at work restoring dysfunctional plants and substations. The aim of Mapisa-Nqakula's visit is to follow up on progress made, and to garner support from surrounding communities and business people in the area.
