Egg prices on the increase

Egg prices on the increase | News Article

Consumers can expect an increase in egg prices due to a shortage of eggs on the market.

The indications are that prices are likely to increase on average by about 7-8%. This price increase will persist while farmers attempt to increase their production to meet the market demand.

The shortage of eggs started last year when farmers saw feed price increases of a minimum of R1 000 per tonne due to the drought. At the same time, between January and April 2016, egg prices dropped substantially as a result of excess eggs on the market.

Farmers struggled to cope with the high feed prices and the low market prices for eggs, leading to many small-scale farmers exiting the market.

Dr Charlotte Nkuna from SA Poultry says it will take time for egg farmers to get back in full capacity.
