Bloemfontein - The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is inviting comments and inputs into the draft framework for Animal Identification, Recording and Traceability, AIRT.

The AIRT system is intended to safeguard the national livestock herd through animal disease prevention and preparedness for disease outbreaks.

One of the key objectives is to enable the tracing of meat, animal products and livestock back to the farm of origin. This would be useful, for example, in tracing the outbreak of a disease, preventing the spread of disease, limiting damage to national or international trade and facilitating market expansion.

The system could have far-reaching consequences in terms of the way animals are identified, moved, slaughtered, where they are kept, and how record-keeping is done, among other things.

Stakeholders are invited to submit comments via email to Vet.Strategy@daff.gov.za before 30 April 2017.
