Bloemfontein - The National Stock Theft Prevention Forum, the NSTPF, believes that the increase in stock theft statistics could be as a result of better reporting and not necessarily an increase in the actual number of crimes committed.

This as the SAPS releases its latest crime statistics, which reflect the nine month period from 1 April to 31 December 2016.

The national average increased 2% over this period, with Free State numbers up more than 4% and cases in North West up more than 8%. The province with the biggest increase in stock theft cases was Gauteng, which went up nearly 12%.

Meanwhile Northern Cape showed the biggest decrease in the country with stock theft cases dropping 5% over the period in review.

Chairperson of the NSTPF, Willie Clack, says while he has not yet had a chance to review the statistics, he believes the increase could be due to an improvement in the reporting of cases.
