COLUMN: The masks we wear... | News Article
Fannie Zim

I go to sleep every single night and wake up every morning hoping for the day when people will start appreciating other people and use things instead of appreciating things and use people.

In the famous words of the great Martin Luther King: "I have a dream...."

I have a dream that one day; we will wake up to the reality of people not wearing masks anymore. That chickens will cross the road without their motives being questioned. A dream that pigs will fly, and no one will be shocked. I have a dream that one day; each and every single human being will gladly and happily be who and what they want to be without the fear of being judged. But sadly, this will just remain a dream for as long as people don't learn to appreciate people for what they truly are without wanting to change anything about that person. And this sad reality is the exact same reason why we as people, WEAR MASKS.

People pretend to be what they're not just so that they can get what they want. A guy will pretend to be the most romantic, loving, kind, caring guy ever just so that he can get his hand in your cookie jar and once that happens... he takes off the mask and you see his true colours. So many women are walking around the streets with bright beautiful smiles on their gorgeous faces... while deep inside they're hurting and sinking into an endless black-hole of depression, hurt and pain. They have learned to wear the masks of pretending like they're strong and "fine" simply because they once opened up to someone and that person used her very same weakness and sufferings to take advantage of her. So many men wear masks of being these loving protecting partners whereas in reality, behind closed doors; we beat the living hell out of our women and children. Politicians wear masks of being caring and compassionate about the less privileged people just so that they can get their votes and immediately when they do; they disappear into thin air like a stinking fart.

I believe one of the hardest things to do in life has to be pretending. You can't pretend to be something or someone you're not for the longest time, simply because you're not that person. Thus, there will forever be a constant internal spiritual fight between the person you truly are behind closed doors and the person you pretend to be in the eyes of the world. We need to be true to ourselves so that we can be true to the world out there. There's no shame in being hurt or broken... so stop being too strong for your own good. It's good to let people know that you're not ok. Gentlemen, there's no wrong in honestly telling a lady what you really want. But there's absolutely everything wrong with wearing a mask and deceiving her to be someone that you're not just because you want the forbidden fruit. This culture of wearing masks is what perpetuates so much ill things happening in the world. People end up doing unimaginable and unthinkable things just so that they can look the part; fit in and be regarded as cool.

Today being a CHOOSEDAY; I challenge you to make a CHOICE of grabbing a chair; sit in front of the mirror and tell me if you recognize the face/person you see in the mirror... and if you don't; right there: take off the mask of the person you see in the mirror so that you can see the true you... for it is time to take off THE MASKS WE WEAR...

Happy CHOOSEday!
