COLUMN: Which one are you - Carrot/Egg/Coffee? | News Article

Life has two ways in which it tests our character. Either you will have nothing happening at all or you will have everything happen all at once.

The latter is the most prevalent one... hence you have most likely heard people say: "My life is a mess, or I'm having such a bad day". It is in the midst of these life challenges/excruciating painful moments in our lives that we best get to see the true content of our character; just how tenacious and strong we are. The challenges we face in life brings divides us into three different groups of people - carrot, egg or coffee people.

In the context of this article; let's think of life's challenges and tough times as boiling water. Now, my question to you is: WHICH ONE ARE YOU?

You're mosy likely to choose the one you like more, coffee for coffee lovers? Eggs for those who loves their eggs? Or carrots for vegetarians and health freaks? But let's unveil these three different kinds of people:

The CARROT people...

The carrot is hard in nature but once you put it in hot boiling water, it softens up. These are people who are usually strong, these are the kind of people who looks at the problem and tells themselves that they are stronger than anything and everything they face but once things don't work out the way they wanted and when they expected them to; when a surprise of hardships of life hits them and they find themselves in hot water... they soften up and lose all hope of recovering their strength and trudging through the challenges, hence most of them usually end up being diagnosed with anxiety and depression. These people find it easy to worry more about their problems than they do with finding solutions. They are more inclined to see their problems as a mountain that can't be climbed as opposed to seeing that mountain as a joyous climb to the top; hence some, if not most of them, attempt suicide and some, sadly succeed in taking their lives.

Then there's the egg people...

The structure of an egg is of such a nature that; the outside part, the shell, is hard, while the inside part is soft. (By the way; I love eggs and those who know me, will tell you that; I define breakfast by the presence of eggs in whatever I'm having that morning... But whether I am an egg person or not; I shall not disclose). But once you put an egg into the hot boiling water, the shell becomes soft while the inside part becomes hard. Well, some people are like an egg. They appear strong on the outside while on the inside they're very soft. These people are usually kind, warm hearted and loving. They give everything they do in life their best shot... they have a high tolerance level but once they reach a point of being fed up of moving mountains for people who couldn't move a sand grain for them; once they find themselves in hot water of realisation of the fact that they have allowed you to take advantage of them; they harden up on the side and become something they weren't. These are the good people gone bad. These are the people that R Kelly was talking about in his song: "When a woman is fed up; there's nothing you can do". It's very hard for these people to trust again and do things wholeheartedly again. These people allow life's challenges to change them and bring out the bad in them. Through ill treats of life; they discover a side of them that they never knew existed. Often times; they blame those responsible for them turning out they way they did, for their actions.

Finally, we have the COFFEE people...

I want to write about these people right away but I will be committing the greatest crime to humankind if I did that without a cup of strong black coffee by my side. The thought of its rich aroma alone is already giving me multiple mini orgasms (hahaha, as a good friend of mine, Hlehle, would say). Here's something special and interesting about coffee; you can never best enjoy it's taste and smell of you mix it with cold water. Thus, it requires hot water for its taste and smell to be best savoured. When the coffee people faces challenges and hardships of life, they don't look at the strength inside of them to overcome but they smile and look at those very same challenges with excitement for they know that it's in those challenges that they're going to gather strength, become stronger and better people. These people are risk takers. They don't do things by the book. They always look out for ways to grow, mature and learn. They don't allow the situation to change them for bad but rather for the best. They are optimists. They have immense faith, hope and believe that no matter how hard and tough things are; soon they will get better. They believe that joy comes in the morning. That at the end of every storm, there's a beautiful rainbow and the sunshine awaiting. These are the people who walks into the room and brightens it up. They make their presence felt. They take the bad with the good. They smile and find joy in sorrow and confusion. They simply make the best out of everything; just like coffee does with boiling water.

The sad truth is that we don't have control over other people's actions; how they treat us or handle us but we certainly have a choice over how we react to their treatment. Do we see their treatment as a reflection of what and who THEY are or what/who WE are.

Once again I ask you; which one are you?

Take a moment; look deep into your soul and decide which one you are or want to forever be.

Today being a CHOOSEday; I challenge you to make a CHOICE and decide whether you are a Carrot/Egg/Coffee.

Happy CHOOSEday!
