COLUMN: The power of the tongue | News Article

... I grew up always being curious about why people lost it every time they heard that someone spread some malicious rumours about them.

I always thought to myself "why not just let the rumours be and carry on with your life". But more to my curiosity, there was a little boy in me who wondered why people found it so easily to realise things in others and not in themselves. By losing your cool when someone spread malicious rumours of you; it means you realise and acknowledge the power of that person's tongue to paint you as the person they claim you are and to actually make people see you as such. When this happens; your reputation is in the balance all because of someone's mere tongue. However, suffice it to say: You don't have control over what people think or say about you, but you certainly have control over how you respond. That power lies vested in your tongue... you need to use that power to tell yourself that you are a much better person and that you not going to stoop low in life.

It is when you attend an interview that you will see how powerful your tongue is... as you will be well aware of the fact that your chances of being employed rest on what you have to say. How about when you attend a business pitch to convince a client to buy into your services; or attend a meeting with a prospective investor to try and convince them to invest in your business... in both instances you know that your future rests squarely in the power of your tongue to sell a dog to a cat. If you struggle to understand the power that your tongue holds; wait until you say something that cost you a friendship or relationship. Wait until you hurt your loved one with just your mere words... doing so much irreparable damage that nothing you say or do is good enough for them to forgive you and forget what you’ve said.

Now, let's explore this subject further in depth by having a look at a few Bible scriptures:

John 1: 1-3: "In the beginning, there was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made." At birth... at the beginning of your life; you are born with the power to be anything and everything you desire in life and the power to speak anything and everything into your life... That power is in your tongue; in the form of the words, you speak. Your words shape up your life as they determine your actions to follow... Everything you want to create in life and make out of your life, it will never come to pass without you making it happen. You need to confess it into your life with your tongue.

The book of Genesis 1:3 goes further: "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." In the beginning, the earth was dark and formless but because God knew that there was power vested in His tongue, in the word: He simply used that power of the tongue to bring about LIGHT unto the earth. That same power exists inside of you too. Whatever the dark situation you find yourself in right now, be it debt that you’re sinking in, heartbreak, confusion and setbacks in life; all you have to do is to use the power vested in your tongue and speak LIGHT into your life's dark situations.

But wait: How on earth can a mere word bring about light into your life? Now, listen to what the Bible says.

The book of Galatians 2:20 says "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." The power vested in your tongue emanates from the fact that the words you speak, have life. The glorious power of Jesus Christ exists in your tongue as He lives through you. Use that power to speak yourself out of rags to riches; out of a pain-filled life into a joy-filled life; out of failure to success. No matter the situation that you find yourself in right now or no matter what happen, always remember that you always have a choice.

Listen to what the Bible says about the choices you have in life:

In the book of Deuteronomy chapter 30 verse 19, God said: "Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make." The greater part of the reality you see in life is based on the words that you confess with your tongue as those words eventually become what you believe. Today, God has called you to make your choice in life. He has called you to use the power of your tongue to determine the rest of your life. He has placed before you; life and death; health and sickness; sadness and happiness; inspiration and depression; by the power vested in your tongue and today being a CHOOSEDAY; I invite you to make a CHOICE to use the power vested in your tongue to positively carry you forward in life.

Happy CHOOSEDAY!
