Officials intercept Ferrari F1 being smuggled into SA─── 06:46 Thu, 30 Mar 2017
Pretoria - SARS customs officials have intercepted a Ferrari F1, worth an estimated R13.8 million, which was being smuggled back into the country.
SARS said in a statement that the owner failed to follow correct import procedures when first bringing the car into South Africa in 2014, including paying custom duties and VAT. As a result, the vehicle was parked in a bonded warehouse for three years.
Spokesperson Sandile Memela says the owner last month submitted an export declaration to take the car to the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Beitbridge border post. He says a day later an attempt was made to have the car smuggled back into the country through the same border post.
The vehicle has been detained and a letter of intent was issued to the owner as part of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act No 3 of 2000 to enable them to make representation to SARS.
