'Efficiency of state owned enterprises still in question'─── 07:33 Thu, 23 Feb 2017
Cape Town - An economist says the governance, efficiency, and financing of state owned enterprises were not sufficiently addressed by Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan in his budget speech.
Raymond Parsons, economist at the North West University's Potchefstroom Business School, says although Gordhan had to find a balance between promoting economic growth and job creation on the one hand and balancing the books on the other, he should have touched on the issues surrounding state owned companies and how government aims to address them.
“He did refer to them, but I think there was an expectation that he would say more about Eskom and about South African Airways, or at least show more progress than he was able to reveal. All the ministerial votes will be coming up in the next few weeks, and that will be his opportunity to explore some aspects of the budget speech with the individual ministers".
