FS gets new Hawks boss | News Article

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in the Free State, better known as the Hawks, has a new provincial head.

This is according to a statement that was issued by Parliament last month, which revealed that Cabinet appointed Kubandran Moodley as the man who will take the daunting task of manning the Hawks in the province.

Moodley was previously serving as the head of the Hawks’ Anti-Corruption Unit. According to the Hawks spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi, Moodley’s appointment was effective from the beginning of this month. Moodley is the first of two appointments that were made for men set to head the Free State and North West provinces.

Moodley is joined by Patrick Mbotho, who was also appointed last month by Cabinet and is said will be the head of the Hawks in the North West. Unlike Moodley, Mbotho’s appointment is shrouded with a cloud of controversy following reports that in July last year, he sent two graphic sexual messages, apparently to an official group comprising several detective commanders in the Western Cape, from his official cell phone via WhatsApp. Mulaudzi earlier told OFM News that due processes were followed in Mbotho’s new appointment and his background was thoroughly checked, including any outstanding criminal and departmental investigations and no criminal or departmental offences were found. Furthermore, Mulaudzi said that Mbotho had already been sanctioned for the Western Cape incident by police in the province and his appointment was approved by Cabinet last month.
