MMM mayor to clean BFN landfill─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 08:21 Mon, 17 Dec 2018
The mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Olly Mlamleli, is at the South Park landfill site in Bloemfontein this morning to participate in a clean-up operation there.
Mlamleli is joined by the Free State MEC of Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, and a team from the municipality.
In a statement the municipality says that the mayor has decided to take heed of the community’s concerns about the state of the landfill sites in the metro.
The clean-up operations take place from 08:30.
The area close to the landfill and the South Park cemetery have become notorious in recent years for hijackings.
Also not too far from the landfill, there is work being done to develop the area known as Vista Park extension three. This area located next to the University of the Free State’s South Campus, is being prepped to become a residential area.
The metro has this year been plagued by allegations of a collapse in service delivery, such as refuse collection, access to clean and safe water, sewer spillages, dirt, potholes and a poor maintenance budget to fix potholes.
More recently OFM News reported that smoke from the ongoing fires at the garbage dump in the north of Bloemfontein garnered numerous complaints from residents in the area.
The municipality in a statement said the smoke is non-toxic and further blamed the burning of waste on informal declaimers, or by hot ash that has been disposed in bins and transported to the dump.
The metro launched a clean-up campaign at the landfill site.
