Mashinini launches festive road safety campaign | News Article

The MEC of Police, Roads, and Transport, Sam Mashinini, is expected this morning to officially launch the 2018 Provincial Festive Season Road Safety Campaign in Harrismith.

The spokesperson at the provincial department, Hillary Mophethe, said the aim of this event is to alert and encourage all commuters on national roads on the importance of abiding by the rules of the road as that will keep them safe and alive. This comes after several deaths were reported last week and over the weekend following accidents on roads in the Free State.

Among the accidents that were reported on over the weekend in the Free State was one which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. This accident happened on the N1 south of Bloemfontein, near Tom's Place and it is reported by Emergency Medical Services in the province that a 22-seater and a truck had a head-on collision. Eight people were declared dead, while 28 were moderately injured. Meanwhile, on Sunday, another accident involving a truck and a car took place on the R103 road between Villiers and Cornelia. In that accident, four were declared dead on the scene and one person was critically injured. This brings the total of reported road deaths this weekend alone to 12, with 29 injured in these accidents.

Road and traffic principles are expected to be reiterated at this event and Mashinini will also deliver his plan on how he intends to reduce accidents on National Roads by 50% by the year 2020 in line with the National Road Safety Campaign. This event will kick off at 11:00 at the Emoyeni Guest Lodge alongside the N3 road at Harrismith.
