High fire warning, heat wave conditions in central SA─── PULANE CHOANE 11:40 Sun, 18 Nov 2018
The South African Weather Services has warned residents in central South Africa that extremely high fire conditions prone to dangers such as wild fires can be are expected in these regions on Sunday.
These include the central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, Free State and North West.
This is according to a statement issued by the weather service on Sunday morning, where it has also warned residents in these three regions that heatwave conditions with persistently high temperatures are to be expected in these regions until Monday.
Meanwhile, OFM News reliably learnt that there were a number of stock losses and grazing area losses, including over 200 sheep and more than 20 000 hectares of pastures, following the fire that spanned over 80 kilometres from Trompsburg to Smithfield.
The Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association (FSUFPA) containing the fire on Saturday but were unable to provide details of damage.
Damage assessments will commence on Monday.
A farmer in the area, who requested to remain anonymous, said that another farmer had to shoot over 100 of his own sheep on Friday, owing to severe burns and injuries the flock had sustained.
The anonymous source also said that relief efforts would be needed in the area as the livestock did that survive the fire would now need fodder as a substantial amount of grazing pastures had been lost in the fire.
