Free State receives R13.5 million's drought relief | News Article

The Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has received R13.5 million for drought relief.

This additional conditional grant is allocated by National Government to provinces that are hard hit by drought.

Tabling the provincial mid-term budget, Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman told the House that the Agriculture Department will also receive an additional R10.3 million which will mainly go towards the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme and Letsema Projects grants. This initiative comes months after the National Disaster Management centre called on organs of state to implement contingency plans to enable the national executive to deal effectively with drought-hit provinces.

The Free State, Northern Cape, North West, Eastern Cape and the Western Cape are currently among the provinces considered national disasters. Meanwhile, the DA’s spokesperson on Public Accounts and Finance, David van Vuuren, told OFM News they welcome this allocation.
