Spokesperson at the Northern Cape Department of Education, Geoffrey van der Merwe, told OFM News that statements made by the Democratic Alliance in the province on the department’s failure to properly handle its scholar transport project are untrue.

Responding to statements made by the DA’s Andrew Louw, who said the project had not been functioning well for over a year owing to a school bus not having diesel, among other things, Van der Merwe admitted while there had previously been challenges with the Vosburg-Britstown route, these have since earlier this year all been resolved.

“The Northern Cape Department of Education took over the learner transport function on 1 April 2017 from the Department of Transport, Safety, and Liasion in the province. Part of this process was to review routes that learners are transported to and from on a daily basis. Yes, we experienced challenges with the Vosburg to Britstown route and we replaced the service provider after we found that he was unreliable,” Van der Merwe said.

Van der Merwe admitted that some learners had missed out on school days earlier in the year but stated that the matter had since been resolved and measures were already in place to ensure learners writing exams are not compromised owing to scholar transport issues.
