The much-anticipated media briefing by the North West Premier, expected to address the outcomes of his assessment on the performance of the provincial government on Wednesday, was postponed.

Job Mokgoro’s spokesperson, Vuyisile Ngesi, tells OFM News that the premier, after assessing and applying his mind, came to the conclusion that he needed to further consult with various stakeholders. He says the decision came at the time when Mokgoro was still assessing some of the reports as they may prove to be important in order to give a clear picture on the progress of the provincial government.

He adds that during the planned media briefing the premier was expected to address issues that are besieging the Local Municipalities including the recent violent protests. Ngesi says Mokgoro is still awaiting and going through several reports on his table and will address the media in due time.

“He will speak on a wide range of issues, which is why he wanted an assessment of the performance of government since he took over from June the 22nd to date. Remember that he consulted a wide range of people from public servants and senior government officials,” says Ngesi.

Mokgoro took over the reigns from former premier Supra Muhumapelo earlier this year following series of violent protests in major towns, including Mahikeng and Klerksdorp, over services delivery.

Ngesi, however, refused to name the stakeholders the premier needed to consult with in this regard. Earlier, Parliament support staff and researchers said the financial, governance and capacity challenges at various departments in the provincial government are so severe that national government interventions could take as long as 18 months to turn the situation around.

In May, five offices in the provincial government were placed under national government administration.
