FS Scopa to take legal action against Cogta MEC─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:54 Thu, 11 Oct 2018
An angry Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts in the Free State Legislature (Scopa) says it is going to take legal action against the Human Settlements MEC, Oupa Khoabane and the troubled Fezile Dabi District Municipality.
MPL Kenalemang Phukuntsi says Khoabane snubbed two meetings to which he received invitations to come and account about the state of this municipality. In response to the municipality not reacting to their meeting requests, the committee decided to undertake an in loco visit.
OFM News' Pulane Choane reports that, according to the committee, the municipality is in a volatile state and problems are spiralling out of control.
Committee Chairperson, Neels van Rooyen, says with their arrival at the municipality MPL's were refused entrance by a private security guard who allegedly acted on the orders of the municipal manager, Lindi Molibeli.
He said during conversations with councillors they found that councillors are not even allowed to conduct their meeting on the premises. Van Rooyen says these actions of Molibeli and the MEC not attending meetings are signs of total disregard for the committee.
Phukuntsi says the situation cannot be allowed and their concerns about the situation at the municipality were sparked by the adverse findings in the Auditor-General’s report on municipalities in the Free State.
