DA wants ministerial intervention after sewage spill | News Article

Opposition parties in the troubled JB Marks Municipality, which includes Potchefstroom, has called for the direct intervention by the minister of water and sanitation, Gugile Nkwinti, over what they call a sewage crisis.

The Democratic Alliance councillor, Johan Zerwick, says during their oversight visit on Wednesday, they found the storm-water tunnel that crosses Ward 1, 4 and the N12 road to Bert’s bricks bridge has now become an open sewage channel posing a health risk to the residents.

Zerwick says upon their inspection, they found that the bridge’s sewage gully structure was broken open to let all the sewage and storm-water back into the municipality’s sewerage system going to the plant. He says this was done to ensure that the sewage from the channel does not run to the plot area and into the Mooi River.

Earlier OFM News reported on the concerns raised by residents in that area who said they feared for their lives over this water spillages engulfing their yards and graveyards.

Meanwhile, the departmental spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, says the department is aware of the situation and they are concerned.
