Four children, including a four-month old baby, have been identified as the victims of a shack fire at Koster in North West.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Senthumule informal settlement, claimed the lives of seven people in total.

North West police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, says the other victims are women between the ages of 19 and 48. Botma says local police are investigating and it is believed that the cause of the fire might have been a candle that tipped over because there is no electricity in the area.

Police do not suspect foul play and Botha says there was no trace of combustible products.

According to the father of one of the victims, the occupants of the shack include 48-year-old Boitumelo Mafoko and her children, 21-year-old Debogang, 19-year-old Boikanyo, 5-year-old Manga, 3-year-old Mpopo and 2-year-old Koketso. The 4-month-old infant, Sanga, was Debogang’s baby.
