Fourteen North West municipalities that have not been put under administration are not off the hook yet as assessments are still being carried out on their state of affairs.

This is according to the spokesperson in the Office of the Premier, Vusiyile Ngesi, who says the Provincial Executive Committee (Exco) and the Department of Human Settlements are still assessing the state of these municipalities.

Mokgoro invoked Section 139 on the identified eight municipalities in the province, citing dire straits due to the alleged corruption and tender irregularities within these municipalities.

Municipalities across the province have been in tatters and this was made worse by the Auditor-General’s report earlier this month, indicating increased irregular expenditure in municipalities from R3,19 billion to R4,29 billion in the 2016-17 financial year.

But Ngesi says they are fully aware of concerns surrounding the process that was followed to put these municipalities under administration.

“Exco advised that more municipalities need to be added to the list of those that are under administration and consideration will be given to those reports.

Placing eight municipalities under administration does not mean it is the end, it is a work in progress,” says Ngesi.
