Water supply to some suburbs in the southern parts of Bloemfontein has returned to normal, after the Brandkop Reservoir was without water for 36 hours this week.

This comes as residents in the Northern suburbs have also reported issues relating to water supply in their areas.

Spokesperson for Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Qondile Khedama, says most of the affected areas started receiving water from 18:00 last night. He adds water pressure will normalise once most of the reservoirs in the city are above 50%.

DA Councillor Rossouw Botes explains water could not be pumped by Bloem Water from the Welbedacht Dam to the main Brandkop Reservoir due to maintenance carried out by Eskom.

This reservoir, which Botes says feeds 69% of Bloemfontein, started being filled with water yesterday at 14:00 pm. The power utility had completed the maintenance earlier that day, something Khedama has confirmed.

Botes stresses it takes time for the water to reach all the affected areas in the south of Bloemfontein from this reservoir, which is located close to Pellissier.

He told OFM News it takes time to fill the internal network, because there are a lot of areas that are fed from the Brandkop reservoir, explaining why some residents in Langenhoven Park have also been experiencing low water pressure.

Meanwhile, individuals residing in the Northern parts of Bloemfontein, including Pentagon Park, Heuwelsig and Dan Pienaar, have reported low water pressure in some parts and a total lack of water in others.

Botes explains this is due to low supply in the Arboretum Reservoir which provides these areas with water. He says the municipality is working on feeding this reservoir with water and provides regular updates on the matter.

Botes adds there is also a problem with the pressure tower in Gilles van der Walt Street, and it can only be filled with water once the Arboretum Reservoir has reached a certain percentage of water.

Khedama calls on residents who are without water, to report this to the municipality’s call centre, which is 0800 111 300. He says “the technical team is on the ground attending to enquiries we have been receiving since last night”.
