The Congress of the South African trade union (Cosatu) is asking for a moratorium on the job cuts at the Impala Platinum Mine (Implats) in the North West.

Cosatu, today, marched against the planned retrenchment of 13 000 jobs over a period of the next two years at Implats in Rustenburg to deliver a memorandum.

Cosatu deputy General Secretary, Solly Phetoe told OFM News, if implants continues with the threats to shed 13 000 jobs, the trade union will mobilise and embark on a nation-wide shutdown.

Earlier the company said it had little choice but to consider its restructuring process, which involves scaling down on operations and divisions, if the company was to generate sufficient cash by the 2021 financial year.

Phetoe says it is unacceptable that such big companies as Lonmin and Implats, targets vulnerable employees to chase after profit, he further says during their march today they asked the mines as to why they are not retrenching big earning executives.

He also took a swipe at allegations, that the South African government is planning to lay off about 30 000 public servants, saying they will not accept this.

"We are rejecting that as Cosatu we have marched to Rustenburg Municipality where Lonmin, Impala, the department of mineral resources and government were there to receive our memorandum. We are saying they must stop that thing and there must be a moratorium on all the retrenchments that are happening in South Africa and the president of the Republic of South Africa must pronounce on that,” says Phetoe.
