The Mangaung Metro Municipality is to officially hand over ‘The Edge’ restaurant in Bloemfontein to a contractor who will operate it.

This, after the restaurant located at Naval Hill just a few meters away from the famous Nelson Mandela statue has become a white elephant and gathered dust for almost four years.

OFM News reported in 2015 that the Metro owed R400 000 to professional consultants involved in the construction of the restaurant.

The DA's Johan Pretorius then said the restaurant could not open its doors before all the procedures were completed and that the building was not complete when it was opened for Macufe events by former mayor Thabo Manyoni in 2014.

When OFM's news team conducted an oversight visit two months ago, it was found that the restaurant still had its doors shut and was gathering dust.

Municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, then said the municipality plans to let the restaurant for a period of two years through supply chain management but was struggling to find a competent, qualified service provider who would afford the rental amount.

The handover ceremony is expected to take place tomorrow morning.
