'He shoved a 9mm in my face' - #ExclusiveInterview with Darren Scott | News Article

OFM's Just Plain Drive presenter, Darren Scott, told OFM News' Josca Human how a man shoved a 9mm firearm into his face while he was stuck in traffic - just minutes after doing his Just Plain Drive show last Thursday evening.

Shortly after the incident, Scott found Metro police who first wanted to finish their conversation before helping him.

The well-known radio personality broadcasts from the Johannesburg studios in Gauteng. He tells OFM News that he was on his way home to Fourways and while he was going down William Nicoll Drive, he was approached by three aggressive men at an intersection.

"While I was waiting at the traffic light, I suddenly saw two guys. One shoved his elbow through my window which was open about six inches. The next thing, I saw another guy come in front of him and he shoved a 9 mm in my face," says Scott.

He tells OFM News that everything after that was a blur. He was in a state of shock. He explains that the man with the gun was very aggressive and kept screaming. Scott says he tried to turn off the car, but the robber kept trying to go for the keys.

"They started screaming for cell phones and laptops. When they saw I had a ring on my finger, they grabbed my hand and tried to pull it off. The ring just does not come off. That was scary in itself as I have heard stories where they pull out wire cutters,” says Scott.

He says with the gun still being pointed at him, the three men left his finger and started demanding his cell phone. He says the men also demanded a laptop. He could have said no, but he did not want to take any chances. He says the laptop was underneath the driver’s seat behind him.

“Every time I tried to explain to them what I was trying to do, I kept getting shouted at and was told to shut up. The most scary part of this was having to reach back with a gun in my face. At that moment I really thought he was going to pull the trigger,” he says.

The radio personality says he had to open his window completely to give them the laptop - luckily they took the laptop and ran off.

“He screamed at me to go but at that moment I could not get the car going. This made him even more aggressive. At this moment he had his finger on the trigger, and I thought any sudden movement might make him panic and hit the trigger. I then managed to get the car going,” says Scott.

He explains there was a taxi on his left which he thought was trying to block him but he managed to get past it. He thinks they came from the taxi.

He says he was not angry when the incident happened. “I have been through a lot of things in my life and it has been recommended that I should go to counselling. I do have this haunting recollection that comes back every now and again. I have never been in a situation where I have had a gun held to my head before,” explains Scott.

He says members of the JMPD were approximately 80 metres up the road. “My first action was to go straight to them and tell them what had happened. They were busy chatting and were more interested in finishing their conversation than actually helping me. By the time they actually casually got into their cars, they were way too late. These guys are quick,” says Scott.

He went straight home and went to the police station the next morning. He tells OFM News that at that moment he just wanted to spend time with his boys. “There were numerous moments when I thought I would not see them again,” says Scott.

He was not expecting anything out of the ordinary when he went to the police the next morning. “I just went there to fill out documentation and report the incident because you have a 24-hour window period. I was not expecting anything else, but they were absolutely fantastic. The police were genuinely concerned and they offered counselling."

He says he got his case number a few hours later and he got a call from the investigating officer who was also very concerned about his wellbeing. “She guaranteed me that she would do everything in her power to investigate the situation,” says Scott.

“It’s not always a general thing that all police are bad. These guys were absolutely fantastic and restored my faith in the police again,” says Scott.
