More SANDF medics deployed to #Mahikeng─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 12:27 Mon, 23 Apr 2018
More medical personnel from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has arrived at the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital.
Spokesperson Mafi Mgobozi says the number of medical personnel offering a variety of specialities at the hospital now stands at 80. This number does not include the infantry soldiers on the ground in Mahikeng, who are there to assist with transporting medication from the provincial depot which was rendered non-functional by disgruntled employees.
This comes after more than 40 medics were deployed to the North West province’s capital on Saturday morning.
Health services came to a grinding halt two months ago when health workers and members of the National Health Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) went on a strike and a go slow.
This escalated to a community uprising that led to those health workers who were still working also abandoning their posts because, according to the provincial health department, “they feared for their lives”.
Mgobozi says the SANDF teams are there to assist in treating and distributing medication to patients. Meanwhile, the department says the availability of medication and medical supplies is also improving.
