OFM News was just informed that an agreement has been reached between The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the Mangaung Metro in the Brandwag-eviction crisis that was unfolding in Bloemfontein today.

The Free State Provincial Manager of the SAHRC, Thabang Kheswa, said in an interview with OFM News that the municipality agreed to hold off on the eviction for a couple of days.

The crisis unfolded when more than 65 Bloemfontein families were evicted out of the Brandwag Municipal flats this morning.

Residents and their belongings were left stranded in the rain and the SAHRC intervened. The eviction lead to clashes between angry residents and police officers

The South African Human Rights Commission made a finding in an earlier eviction-case in the Free State that if the municipality enforces an eviction order, it is obligated to offer residents alternative accommodation.

It is not sure yet what alternative accommodation Brandwag-families will receive or for how long the municipality is going to hold off on the eviction.

Mangaung Metro Mangaung Metro EFF Councillor Baba Soabelo earlier described the actions of the municipality inhumane.
