Urgent action needed to protects farmers and farm workers along the Lesotho Border | News Article

Government must take action to safeguard communities especially farmers and farm workers in the Eastern Free State next to the Lesotho Border.

This according the President of Cope, Mosioua Lekota, who will attend the funeral of a Ladybrand farm manager who was brutally murdered earlier this month.  Tankiso Isaac Pharoe was attack by two men and his wife, Francine, who was stabbed multiple times, survived the attack.

Lekota says the ANC government has not done enough to ensure the safety of farm and rural workers.

Policing needs to be sufficient in an effort to protect South African communities along the Lesotho border, because can also effect international relations between the two countries. He says Cope will be making a statement at the funeral about these issues and action needed to be taken by government.

Lekota also pleads to President Cyril Ramaphosa to give urgent attention to this matter as there is  very limited protection of people occupying  farms especially around the Lesotho border. This leaves  communities vulnerable to attacks. Police also need to work in collaboration with the community to ensure that violent disruptions become a non-issue on farms.

He says it is important to emphasize Section 11 of the Bill of Rights which states everyone in South Africa has the right to life and would like to emphasize that the killing of farm and rural workers needs to stop.

According to Lekota the ruling party has bitten of more than they can chew, by calling for the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution. This callous decree has created the perception that the invasion of private property is condoned. Cope denounces these ideas and would like to emphasise the protection and safety of all South Africans.

Pharoe’s  funeral will take place at Tweespruit (Thabo Phatswa ) in Ladybrand.
