IPID to handle #ThabangMosiako assault case as police are implicated─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 15:42 Mon, 19 Feb 2018
Police have handed over an investigation into the assault of an athlete and student, Thabang Mosiako, to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
This comes after allegations that police officials also assaulted the victim in Potchefstroom. Mosiako, a long-distance runner, and a friend were apparently injured in an alleged racially motivated attack outside of the North West University campus earlier this month. A case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was in the process of being investigated by police. Arrests are yet to be made. According to the police’s Adel Myburgh, the violent incident took place after RAG celebrations…
The case will be handed over to IPID since police have been named as accused in the incident. According to Myburgh, two groups of students allegedly engaged in a fight when the victim sustained head injuries. NWU’s Louis Jacobs said that the university condemns any attack on human rights. Jacobs stressed that the incident took place off campus. RAG celebrations bring an influx of young people from all over the country to the campus, however, students are made aware that should an incident that undermines anyone’s human rights occur, it should be brought to the university’s attention, said Jacobs.
