#SONA2018debate: Badly-run SOEs threaten country’s economy | News Article
Mmusi Maimane

The leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mmusi Maimane, says nothing threatens the country’s finances more than corruption and maladministration in state-owned enterprises (SOE).

Maimane says issues faced at the power utility Eskom is a clear example of this. He says the greatest applause during Cyril Ramaphosa’s delivery of the SONA was when he promised to end cadre deployments on the boards of the SOEs and committed to appointing experienced, competent people. Maimane, however, says Ramaphosa’s commitment in this regard is not enough and more needs to be done to secure finances in state-owned companies. He further called for the privatisation of the South African Airways and an end on the Eskom monopoly.

This comes days after Eskom’s executive Matshela Koko’s resignation. Although Koko noted in his resignation letter that his resignation was not an admission of any wrongdoing, he stood accused of misleading parliament about payments made to consultancy firm Trillian and leaking confidential information to #Gupta associates.
