Two lives claimed in accidents on NC roads this weekend | News Article

Two people died in accidents on Northern Cape roads this weekend. Police spokesperson in the province, Dimakatso Mooi, says both accidents occurred on Saturday.

In the first accident, Mooi says an Audi sedan - carrying a 10-year-old girl who was believed to be travelling with her parents – collided with a Toyota Fortuner on the N14 near Kuruman. The 10-year-old girl died in the collision.

In the second accident, a 29-year-old man died when the Toyota sedan he was travelling in collided with an Isuzu bakkie on the N1 near Hanover. Mooi says the man was a passenger in the sedan. Other occupants in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries. Mooi urges motorists to be vigilant on South Africa’s roads during the festive season

Mooi says “the police would like to urge drivers to take extra precautions when driving, especially during this time of the year when roads are busy with many travelling to different holiday destinations”. She says motorists driving long distances should rest to avoid fatigue and check the roadworthiness of the vehicles before embarking on a long journey.

This comes after Director of the Northern Cape Traffic Department, Lesego Wolfe, told OFM News in October that drunk driving and non-compliance with traffic rules by road users were two factors contributing to road accidents in the country. Wolfe said at the time that the department would be deploying traffic officers to the province’s busiest routes over the festive season. These routes include the R31, the N14, N12 and N1. The accidents that occurred this weekend occurred on the N14 and the N1.
