SALGA members’ assembly to convene in NC and FS | News Article

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in the Northern Cape and the Free State will this week host its annual Provincial Members’ Assembly.

The assembly in both provinces will put a spotlight on the state of municipalities and their ability to deliver services, among others. This comes soon after Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Des van Rooyen, visited the two provinces this month. During his visit to the Free State, Van Rooyen said two priority municipalities - Matjhabeng and Maluti-A-Phofung, might receive a cash injection. The two municipalities are among those with the highest Eskom and water boards debts.

Van Rooyen said Maluti-A-Phofung might receive about R6.5 million while Mafube will receive close to R5 million.

The provincial Cogta HOD, Mokete Duma, confirmed that Matjhabeng currently owes Eskom over R1,7 billion, while Maluti-A-Phofung owes approximately R2 billion.

The SALGA Northern Cape Provincial Members’ Assembly kick-started this morning and is expected to continue tomorrow, while the Free State Provincial Members’ Assembly will be held in collaboration with Mangaung Metro Municipality on October 25 and 26 in Bloemfontein.
