Calls to improve FS healthcare system intensify | News Article

The National Council of Provinces says they have noted calls for improvement within the Free State healthcare system.

The Council’s Chairperson for Committees and Oversights, Jomo Nyambi, says concerns relating to the alleged disregard for people with disabilities, delayed ambulance responses and clinics not operating 24 hours in rural parts of the province are some of the worrying factors raised by communities. He says the second day of the Council’s week-long oversight visit and public engagements has brought a spotlight on the lack of primary care services in the province. Nyambi, however, says members of the public can be assured that some of their challenges will be resolved before the end of the week.

Nyambi says the issues raised by the community of Botshabelo are a huge worrying factor taking into consideration that the provincial health department is still plagued by the lack of medication and medical personnel. He, however, says he is hopeful that the week-long visit will bring some light into how these issues can be resolved.

“As the relevant Ministers are responding we are getting answers. Those who have challenges of wheelchairs will be attended to as well as those who have challenges of getting adequate services. Before leaving this week, we are certain that there would be issued that are resolved and wheelchairs will be delivered to those who have been experiencing challenges”.

Nyambi adds that today they are also looking into issues faced within the Provincial Department of Social Development. He is appealing to communities to come in numbers to the Kaiser Sebothelo Sports Arena in Botshabelo where public engagements are being held.

Among leaders joining the panel discussions, today, is the Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi, Provincial Health MEC Butana Komphela, Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini, Free State Department of Social Development MEC Limakatso Mahasa, and Mangaung Executive Mayor Olly Mlamleli.
