The Free State Provincial Electoral Officer, Mmathabo Rasengane, says special votes have already kick-started this morning in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. She says the residents in Hennenman will elect a new councillor after the position has become vacant after the DA councillor’s resignation.

She says the ward is currently being contested by six political parties and no independent candidates. She says political parties contesting this ward is the ACDP, ANC, DA, EFF, PAU, and UFC.

Rasengane adds that the municipal ward by-elections in Mangaung Metro Municipality will be held on October 18. This, after the death of a council in Ward 12. She says registrations for this ward are under way this coming weekend.

The funeral of Councillor Tshepo Motsomi, who died last month, made headlines after opposition parties in the Mangaung Metro questioned why an amount of R100 000 was allocated for the funeral cost of Ward 12’s deceased councillor.
