A memorial service will be held at the University of the Free State (UFS) for former #FeesMustFall activist, Philela Gilwa, on Wednesday afternoon. Gilwa died following a stabbing incident in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape on 15 July.

Siyamcela Mtamzeli - who served alongside him in a number of student organisations at UFS – says friends and former student leaders will pay their last respects.

He says a special tribute book is currently being compiled in honour of the late student activist which they will give to his family.

“This book will have pictures of him during his time at the UFS. We’ve asked students to also send through messages, tributes, sympathies and memories they’ve shared with Philela just to give to the family as a token of appreciation for sharing their son with us. Philela was dedicated to the cause.”

He was in the process of returning to the UFS to complete his studies following a nine-month suspension he was serving for his involvement in protest action that ensued as a result of the now infamous Shimla Park incident in February 2016.

He was set to make his return to continue with his B.A. Governance and Political Transformation degree this semester.

Gilwa’s body is still in the Western Cape and he will be buried in his hometown in Queenstown on Saturday.

The police in Western Cape are investigating the circumstances surrounding his murder.
