‘Government not helping families of Marikana massacre victims’ - AMCU─── MOEKETSI MOGOTSI 11:36 Sun, 25 Jun 2017
Marikana - The government is not doing enough to assist the families of the 34 Marikana mineworkers who were shot dead by police during wage protests at Lonmin Mine five years ago.
This is according to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) President, Joseph Mathunjwa.
He coordinated the handover of a house to one of the victim’s family in Mqanduli in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
Mathunjwa says the government hasn’t bothered to even check if the mineworker’s kids are still in school or how the families have been living.
"Even the compensation hasn't been finalised, 5 years down the line. Life goes on according to them. I don't blame them, because they finished their work - their work was to kill, not to heal. [Their work] was not to give life, was not to change lives of mineworkers. So, therefore we are picking up pieces as Amcu, to try and clean the mess that was caused by the government," he adds.
