Virginia - A head-on collision involving a taxi and light-motor vehicle left four people dead and 11 other injured.
The crash occurred on the R73 between Virginia and Welkom at around 04:00 this morning.
Netcare 911 spokesperson, Chris Botha, says paramedics found the roadway was obstructed with accident debris and twisted frames from the vehicles when they arrived on the scene.
“The three occupants from the car and one person from the taxi tragically died there at the scene due to very severe injuries they sustain. 11 other people from the taxi had sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor. We had to use the Jaws of Life there and worked for nearly two hours to extricate some of the people trapped in the wreckage.”
He says paramedics from various services stabilised the injured people who were transported to a Welkom hospital where they received further care. Botha says the exact details of the cause of the accident will form part of a police investigation.
