De Aar - A 36-year-old suspect who was arrested in late 2016 in connection with the murder of a seven-year-old boy in De Aar, in the Northern Cape, has been sentenced to life in prison.

The body of little William Duiker was found by a passer-by, dumped near the railway line in Friedlander Street in September 2016. The police said at the time that Jan Bester, who was a family friend of the Duikers, went missing after the corpse was discovered. He was arrested after a manhunt was launched by the police. Police spokesperson, Dimakatso Mooi, says the boy’s family was taken into care by the De Aar police two years before his murder.

“The Duiker family was taken into care by the De Aar Police Station in 2014 after it was discovered that they were living at the dumping site after their father was sentenced to jail for murdering their mother. Crime is not our only job, we must also care for our community. Through the help of different stakeholders we managed to build and furnish a house which they now call home,” says Mooi.

The Cluster Commander of Pixley Ka Seme, Nomahlubi Sofika, further applauded the investigating officer and welcomed the sentencing.

“By killing children, we are destroying the future and those who kill them do not deserve to live in the society. May this sentence send a strong message to other perpetrators that the murder of children will not be tolerated by the police,” says Sofika.
