Welkom - The police in Welkom arrested two men with R60 000 worth of stolen copper cables on Tuesday evening in the Thabong area.

Police spokesperson, Mamello Mokhuoane, says information from community members led to the arrest of the suspects.

She says the suspects were found in possession of stolen copper cable rolls and were in the process of burning them into small bundles.

“The police confiscated six rolls of copper, 12 burned rolls, three large wooden reels, one iron rod and three steel rods. The suspects were arrested and a case of possession of suspected stolen property was opened for further investigation,” she says.

The suspects are set to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

“At this stage that will be the only charge but Eskom will also be conducting internal investigations as preliminary investigations indicated that employees of Eskom might be involved in this crime,” she added.
