Rescue operations yet to cease at Welkom mine | News Article

Welkom - Police in Welkom are still determined to see if they can recover any more bodies of illegal miners at the disused Harmony Eland mine shaft.

A total of 37 bodies have been recovered since rescue operations commenced following an alleged gas explosion at the mine two weeks ago.

Yesterday, police spokesperson Sam Makhele urged community members with missing relatives to come forward.

Makhele said four bodies were recovered this week and only two bodies have been claimed thus far.

A number of foreign nationals from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho were arrested during the operation as well.

Some of them reportedly went underground in January and some in April, while some are said to have been underground since 2015.
