Memorial service held for 12 Wolmaransstad accident victims | News Article

A memorial service was held at Tswelelang Township in Wolmaransstad this afternoon for 12 members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) who were involved in a head-on collision between a minibus and an SUV between Wolmaransstad and Bloemhof last month.

Their bodies were burnt beyond recognition when their taxi caught fire following the accident. The driver of the SUV also died on the scene and has been buried already.

Department of Community Safety and Transport Management in North West spokesperson, Thabo Sematle, says the delays were caused by the verification of their identities so that the families could bury the correct bodies.

“We are now at a stage where that process has been completed successfully and the families have now been given the bodies of their loved ones. Arrangements for the funerals are being completed as we speak. It was expected that the MEC would attend, unfortunately, he had other prior commitments - one of which is that the Premier is tabling a budget speech today as well as the fact that he is responsible for safety in the province. There are protests that have bedevilled the province and Coligny and he is in charge of the situation there.

But we can indicate that he will be able to attend the funeral service on Saturday at the sports ground in Wolmaransstad, in Twelanang Location,” he says.

Sematle says North West Premier, Supra Mahumapelo, has indicated his intention to attend the funeral.

A ZCC delegation from Moria is also expected to attend.
