Wits, Central SA uni's to reopen Monday; NMMU, UCT remain closed | News Article

Johannesburg - Lectures will resume tomorrow at the University of Witwatersrand.

This follows after a day of meetings and negotiations in Johannesburg yesterday.

The university said in a statement that a revised calendar for the rest of the 2016 academic year has been approved by the Senate as well as a contingency plan to ensure that examinations are written.

Although classes are resuming, students will still be allowed to protest but only under certain conditions.

Wits further stated that a general assembly will be held once all constituencies agreed on a unified stance around the matter of free higher education.

Classes at the University of Cape Town remain suspended until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Acting Rector of the University of the Free State, Nicky Morgan, has sent a statement to students and parents about the impact of the non-completion of the academic year, should lectures be disrupted further.

He warned that 6 000 students will not be able to graduate and that the university will also not be able to take in first years.

Morgan added that the interdict against violent protest secured by the UFS is still in force and that police will intervene if the interdict is not respected.

The current academic programme has already been extended by one week and some faculties are working weekends to ensure that learning is completed.

UFS, Central University of Technology and North West university campuses are set to reopen tomorrow.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has, however, announced that they will not be opening campuses tomorrow after students, who are part of the Fees Must Fall movement, once again barricaded the entrance to the university's main campus in Summerstrand on Friday.

On Thursday the university had announced that it would reopen on Friday with the intent of preparing to resume classes on Monday, but has made an about turn after the situation became volatile, with students carrying rocks and burning tyres confronted police and chased away acting Vice-Chancellor, Sibongile Muthwa, who was trying to address them.

Spokesperson Zandile Mbabela says the university will continue to follow all legitimate avenues at its disposal to resolve the present situation.
