Stilfontein SPCA operational again─── MOEKETSI MOGOTSI 08:48 Sun, 14 Aug 2016
Klerksdorp - The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) is operational again in Stilfontein in Northwest after it was illegally occupied by the organisation Matlosana Animal Shelter.
This follows after a Sherriff of the Court evicted the former committee members from the SPCA premises after they had occupied the grounds as a “no kill” organisation.
NSPCA Senior Inspector, Jaco Pieterse, says they had to intervene after the management committee responsible for the Matlosana SPCA failed to take the necessary steps against the alleged racial slurs made by former manager, Suzette Kotze, on social media in May.
Pieterse says the former management committee completely went against the SPCA Act after they had initially just handed Kotze a verbal warning, before suspending her.
“The SPCA movement in South Africa is totally opposed to hate speech and racial comments made and will not tolerate any staff member or committee member who makes any such comments. The NSPCA deemed this case to be very serious as the managementnof the Matlosana SPCA failed to take action, we were forced then to remove thenmanagement committee in terms of the SPCA Act."
He says after the property was regained on Friday afternoon, 7 dead cats and 7 dead dogs that were seemingly euthanised were found in the freezer.
Kotze told OFM News that she did not have any knowledge where the frozen animals came from.
Matlosana Animal Shelter is now operating at new premises.
