Three Tantalising Thirst Quenchers | News Article

Central South African summers are hot and very dry in some parts. Try out these three tantalising thirst quenchers to help you cool off this season!

Not sure if you’ve noticed but Thursday’s are more or less recipe time, getting you ready for a weekend of culinary curiosity. This week Odette has scoured the web to bring you the best cold drink recipes, which aren't that difficult to make but look super fancy.

Watermelon Slushie

This is a great way to use up the watermelon in your ‘fridge that’s become a little mushier than ideal. And, if grown-ups are involved, you can add some clear liquor the adults’ pitcher.

This easy recipe, which makes four cups, requires blending together three cups watermelon chunks, two tablespoons lime juice, one tablespoon sugar, one cup cubed or crushed ice and half a cup of cold water. Add fresh mint if you want to make it a bit more ‘fresh’. You can also ditch the sugar and lime if you want to stay super healthy. Serve immediately and give a quick stir if watermelon pulp floats to top.

Strawberry-Lime Water

This recipe from Pampered Chef is really simple enough for a child to make. Just help with the cutting…In a two-litre jug combine one lime, sliced thinly, six strawberries, also sliced thinly lengthwise, a few sprigs of mint and top up with water. Put in the fridge for at least 20 minutes to infuse. Add ice before serving.

Lavender Lemonade
Give your standard lemonade recipe a makeover with the addition of honey, lavender and vodka. Omit the booze for a kid-friendly drink that still as delicious.

Create syrup by combining two cups water, one cup honey, and two tablespoons lavender buds in a medium saucepan. Bring to the boil over medium heat and immediately remove once bubbling. Let steep 10 minutes. Pour syrup through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher. Let cool to room temperature; stir in one cup lemon juice. Cover and chill four to 24 hours.

To serve, combine 200 ml vodka (omit for kid-friendly drink), two cups sparkling water, and the chilled syrup. Pour lemonade over ice cubes in tall glasses.
