The US Open golf tournament is the latest major sporting event to be postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The major was scheduled to be played between and 18 and 21 June at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.

As of Thursday, the USA is the country with the most confirmed Coronavirus cases in the world after surpassing both China and Italy. Earlier numbers on Thursday confirmed over 80 000 positive cases, while over a thousand people perished to the virus.

The U.S. Golf Association hopes to hold the tournament later in the year, pending the region’s recovery from the pandemic.

Winged Foot was shut down last week when New York Gov., Andrew Cuomo, issued an executive order, halting all non-essential businesses state-wide in response to the outbreak.

New York state has the highest number of positive cases in the USA and is followed by California.

Westchester County, where Winged Foot is located, is one of the hardest-hit areas in the state.

Both of the year’s first two majors, the Masters at Augusta in Georgia, as well as the PGA Championship set for San Francisco’s San Harding Park, have already been postponed. The Master was set to tee-off on 9 April, while the PGA Championship was due to start on 14 May.
