The former South African amateur number one and reigning SA Amateur champion, Wilco Nienaber of Bloemfontein, has been presented with the inaugural Seve Scholarship award in Amsterdam.
The award named after the late and great Seve Ballesteros was presented to Free Stater ahead of the 100th edition of the Dutch Open by the son of the Spaniard Javier Ballesteros.
This took place during the Champions Dinner, which was hosted at the Masters Hall in the Rijksmuseum and was set in the presence of canvasses painted by the Dutch Renaissance Master, Rembrandt van Rijn, and included the priceless piece “The Night Watch”.
The 19-year-old golfer who attended Grey College and recently turned professional, will be provided with the full support of the scholarship for the tournament which tees off on Thursday morning.
Seve Ballesteros won 50 European Tour events, including five Majors, but it was at the Dutch Open in 1976 where he won his first pro tournament. He went on to win the Dutch Open three times.
