Only eight South Africans will be teeing it up at this week’s 101st PGA Championship at the Bethpage Black Course in Long Island, New York.

The 2011 Masters champion, Charl Schwartzel, has withdrawn from the major due to a wrist injury.

The fifth-ranked Justin Thomas of the USA is another player who was forced to withdraw with a wrist injury as well. This means that the major will not be featuring every single one of the top 100 golfers in the world.

Louis Oosthuizen is currently the top-ranked South African, at 21st in the world.

Justin Harding, Shaun Norris, Dylan Frittelli will be playing off the first tee on Thursday, while Richard Sterne, Erik van Rooyen, Oosthuizen, Branden Grace and Brandon Stone will be playing from the 10th.

Sterne will be the first South African to play when he tees off at 13:18, alongside Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and the USA’s David Lipsky.

The last South African to lift the iconic Wanamaker Trophy was Gary Player back in 1972.
