An opening round seven under par 65 by the USA’s Chase Koepka gave him the early clubhouse lead on day one of the 107th BMW South African Open at Glendower.

The younger brother of the US Ryder Cup player, Brookes Koepka, recorded seven birdies, an eagle on the second as well as bogeys on the 1st and 10th.

The two South African amateurs, Garrick Higgo, and Kyle McClatchie each carded rounds of four under par 68 to enter the clubhouse before the afternoon session, just three shots off the pace in a tie for 3rd.

Following his round, McClatchie, said he was happy with his start and thrilled to have made birdies on the tougher holes.

“I made a bunch of birdies out there, including an eagle. It was great start, especially after my first hole.

“I could have scored a double bogey but sinking a little twelve footer there on the first hole kind of boost my confidence a little bit.

England’s Graeme Storm is the defending champion, while South Africa’s Branden Grace has been tipped to win this week.
